Community Champion Spotlight: JP Urban Moving

Books are heavy, but it is so worthwhile making sure that used books can get into the hands of new readers. We are incredibly thankful to our Community Champion JP Urban Moving.

Read on to learn more from Julia Pak, co-owner of JP Urban Moving, about why her company cares so much about children’s literacy and decided to support Brooklyn Book Bodega with in-kind donations. We are so fortunate to have their support.

Why do you volunteer with Brooklyn Book Bodega?

As a successful moving business serving Brooklyn families, we like to give back to our community. We care about moving families as well as we do about children's literacy and services that impact their well-being. That's why we are happy to join forces with Brooklyn Book Bodega to support the mission to ensure that all children—no matter their racial, cultural, linguistic, or socioeconomic background—have access to books they want to read.

In the moving industry, we see many resources wasted, and it's great to have an organization that helps redirect books to support children's literacy. This is our way of supporting communities with a cause near and dear to our hearts.

How did you first get involved with Brooklyn Book Bodega?

In the fall of 2020, we conducted a move for an afterschool school program—Still Waters In A Storm—based in Bushwick, which had to close down due to the pandemic. They had a lot of children's books in excellent condition that were going to be disposed of. We brought about 2,000 books back to our office and were looking for a way to give these books a second life and get them into the hands of children that needed them the most.

We reached out to the Park Slope Parents network, who recommended Brooklyn Book Bodega (BBB). When we contacted BBB, Seema was responsive and happy to come by the office and assess the inventory. We moved selected books to BBB's office location pro-bono. Since then, it's been a volunteer match made in heaven, and we have been providing pro-bono Moving Services to help BBB transport books whenever needed. Also, we continually promote BBB to our customers—when they move with us, we collect their children's books to deliver to Brooklyn Book Bodega.

Why should someone else get involved with Brooklyn Book Bodega?

For anyone interested in helping to encourage children's literacy, learning, and development, get involved with BBB and help get resources into the hands of children who need them most. Your support matters in any capacity you are able to give.

Julia’s favorite childhood book was Shel Silverstein’s A Light in the Attic.
